“An informed patient is the best patient. VECTRA and VISIA are great educational tools. They can get patients excited but also manage their expectations.
Canadian plastic surgeon Dr. Kenneth Smith relies on both the VECTRA® and VISIA® systems from Canfield to explain procedures, illustrate options and create a plan that will make physician and patient happy. “One of the major focuses of our practice is patient education. The more informed a patient is, the better that patient is going to be through the whole process.”
Having advanced imaging helps. Prior to incorporating VECTRA and VISIA into his practice several years ago Dr. Smith would use other patients’ before-and-after pictures to demonstrate what his clients could look forward to. With 3D and high resolution imaging, Dr. Smith can now show how a procedure or product could appear on the patient themselves. “You can talk to a patient about what you plan to do, but a good visual shortens -- and improves -- the conversation tremendously.”
The technology is apparently appreciated. According to Dr. Smith, “My patients love it. They get very excited seeing VISIA images of my other skin care clients on day 1 of their regimen and then comparison pictures six months into a regimen. It motivates them to begin their own treatment.” As far as using the VECTRA in pre-surgical planning, a picture is worth a thousand words. “For breast augmentation surgery it’s a slam dunk. It allows you to try to establish a more proportionate breast size.”
Dr. Smith appreciates that both devices help optimize staff and save time. “In a busy practice you have to empower your staff to help you. My VISIA is run entirely by my nursing staff. For my VECTRA patients, my staff takes the initial pictures then I take over and do the teaching as far as the surgical options.”
Clinic 805, a full service cosmetic surgery and skin care center in Victoria, British Columbia, is thriving and Dr. Smith is expanding his practice and hiring new staff. One of the first orders of business is to get them trained on the Canfield imaging systems. “They’re an important part of the practice and I want to get the new staff fluid with their technique. I’m very happy that I incorporated VECTRA and VISIA into our practice. The whole staff really enjoys using them.”
